Cannabidiol (CBD) and moringa are both commonly used in traditional medicines across Asian, Indian and African countries. But which plant compound offers the most health benefits?
The green revolution is catching on like wildfire throughout the U.S. However, moringa isn’t as widely-known just yet. Despite centuries of use throughout other cultures, this herb is still one of the world’s best-kept secrets.
So what is moringa, and how does it compare to CBD? The main difference is how CBD affects the endocannabinoid system, impacting many of the body’s functions and processes.
However, moringa still has a lot to offer too. Some might even recommend combining moringa with CBD for the health benefits.
What is Moringa?
According to Inside Moringa, moringa contains 15 times more potassium than a banana and seven times as much vitamin C as oranges. The herb has an impressive concentration of other essential vitamins and minerals the body uses too.
Besides these minerals, the plant offers calcium, proteins, and amino acids. Its leaves also contain potent antioxidants that can rid the body of free radicals and toxins. This is what makes moringa oil, powders, and supplements appealing to people interested in improving their health.
There is current ongoing research into moringa’s potential antimicrobial and anticancer properties as well, and “in particular for its involvement in nociception and neurogenic pain.”
CBD vs. Moringa for Anti-inflammatory Properties
CBD impacts the cannabinoid receptors that make up the endocannabinoid system. This system is responsible for affecting a variety of body functions and processes. These include mood, pain, sleep, digestion, and others.
We see how popular CBD has become as an alternative treatment over the last few years. But how does moringa compare to it?
CBD and moringa can produce similar anti-inflammatory effects. According to a study published in Fitoterapia, combining these supplements offers anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The study analyzed the effects of CBD paired with moringin, moringa’s active compound, a supplement extracted from moringa seeds.
During the study, the researchers determined that natural products like CBD and moringin stimulate anti-inflammatory activity. But other studies highlight the same properties exhibited by moringa alone.
Another study published in Rejuvenation Res. highlighted that the isothiocyanate isolated from moringa acted as a powerful anti-inflammatory while treating murine subacute Parkinson’s disease. This is not unlike the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties of CBD revealed in a Antioxidants (Basel) study.
Other Health Benefits of CBD and Moringa
Some believe CBD and moringa are both helpful for various ailments. Since both offer anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits, unstable free radical molecules may be neutralized with the ingestion of either supplement.
Free radicals can directly cause cancer. And with both of these supplements providing protection against these molecules, it’s safe to say that adding either of them to your daily regimen could be beneficial.
According to Health Line, high doses of CBD can damage the liver. However, the relief from oxidative stress that moringa can provide is beneficial. Thus, pairing CBD with moringa could be a wise move.
Moringa extract improves liver functionality. The high concentration of polyphenols assists in reversing liver oxidation and offers protection against anti-tubercular drugs.
While CBD affects the endocannabinoid system, moringa offers a wide assortment of nutrients that positively impact human health. With this in mind, both supplements offer a plethora of health benefits worth exploring.
